Rin is a creature comprised mostly of light. With the exception of its one large eye which protrudes a few inches from the surface it rests on, Rin is mostly light falling on a two-dimensional plane; no stable form, ethereal enough to walk through. But there is more to Rin than what is immediately visible. Beneath the surface, it is a data collecting program that connects with nearby unprotected wifi networks and catches fragments of images in transit as people use the internet. These image fragments are sent back to Rin's main body where they can be seen floating to the surface from time to time. More recent acquisitions show up more often, but any image that has been saved can always come up again.

There is a direct connection to Rin. Anyone wishing to send an image can email it as an attachment to rin@dansakamoto.com, and it will be forwarded to Rin from there. (Note: Rin is not currently on public display and connected to the internet. The forwarding address is still active though, and anything sent for now will be archived and downloaded by the creature if/when it is connected again.) This direct contact seems to prod the Rin into a more alert state. The sent image appears immediately and the eye looks around frantically for a few moments before returning to its normal state. All received images become a permanent part of the piece.
